Evidence-Based Therapies

Evidence-Based Therapies at Summit at Knoxville

At Summit at Knoxville, we believe that effective healing from addiction and mental health challenges is built upon a strong foundation of diverse, evidence-based therapies. Therapy provides the essential tools, insights, and coping strategies needed to navigate life’s complexities, process past experiences, and build a resilient future.

Our comprehensive therapeutic approach is central to all our programs, designed to empower individuals with the skills necessary for lasting recovery and emotional well-being. Located at 1016 Ic King Rd, Seymour, TN 37865, we are dedicated to bringing cutting-edge therapeutic interventions to East Tennessee.

Our Approach to Therapeutic Healing

Our therapeutic philosophy is rooted in a holistic and personalized understanding of each individual’s journey. We recognize that no single therapy fits all, which is why our multidisciplinary team carefully selects and integrates various modalities to create a tailored treatment plan.

  • Personalized & Integrated: We don’t just offer therapies; we weave them into a cohesive plan that addresses your unique needs, history, and goals, whether you are in residential substance use treatment or residential mental health treatment.
  • Expert Guidance: Our dedicated team of licensed therapists and counselors works under the clinical direction of Michael Brennan, LPC-MHSP, and the psychiatric oversight of our Medical Director, Dr. Brian Fuller, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist. This ensures that all therapeutic interventions are clinically sound and integrated with any necessary medical or psychiatric care.
  • Intensive Engagement: In our residential setting, patients engage in an intensive therapeutic schedule, including 6 hours of therapeutic groups daily and 1 individual therapy session per week, along with daily therapeutic check-ins. This immersive approach allows for deep exploration and rapid skill acquisition.
  • Addressing Root Causes: Our therapies go beyond symptom management to address the underlying thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that contribute to mental health conditions and addiction.

Our Core Therapeutic Modalities

Summit at Knoxville offers a range of scientifically supported therapies, each playing a vital role in the healing process:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a widely used and highly effective therapy that helps individuals identify and challenge negative or unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviors that contribute to their emotional distress or substance use. By learning to reframe distorted thoughts and develop more adaptive coping mechanisms, patients can gain greater control over their reactions and improve their overall well-being. It’s often foundational for conditions like depressionanxiety, and OCD.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is a comprehensive therapy that focuses on teaching skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It is particularly effective for individuals struggling with intense emotional dysregulation, impulsive behaviors, and relationship difficulties, often seen in conditions like bipolar disorder and PTSD.
  • Medication Management: For many mental health and substance use disorders, medication can be a crucial component of a comprehensive treatment plan. Our Medical Director, Dr. Brian Fuller, MD, provides expert psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management, carefully prescribing and monitoring medications to optimize symptom relief and support therapeutic progress. This integrated approach ensures medications are used as tools to aid recovery, not as standalone solutions.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI): MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented communication style with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual’s personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring their own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This therapy is highly effective for individuals ambivalent about engaging in treatment or making significant life changes, and is often used in initial phases of detox and addiction treatment.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Recognizing the profound connection between physical health and mental well-being, our program incorporates nutritional counseling. A balanced diet plays a significant role in mood regulation, energy levels, and overall recovery. Our on-site chef prepares nutritious meals daily, and patients receive guidance on how proper nutrition supports their healing journey, especially beneficial for conditions like panic disorder and general mental health stability.
  • Psychoeducation: Knowledge is empowering. Psychoeducation involves providing comprehensive information about mental health conditions, addiction, their symptoms, causes, and treatment options to both patients and their families. This helps individuals understand their diagnosis, reduces stigma, and equips them with strategies for self-management and long-term recovery. It’s a foundational component across all our mental health programs, including schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia.

Why Our Therapies Make a Difference

The integration of these diverse therapeutic approaches, delivered by a compassionate and experienced team in a structured residential setting, is what sets Summit at Knoxville apart. Our therapies enable patients to:
